I know that most of you don't like actual, you know,
good movies..but my wife was kind enough to go with me to see The Wrestler over the weekend. I just thought I would share my thoughts for those of you who were wondering about it or thinking about seeing it, because I really enjoyed it.
As someone who has been fortunate enough to get a brief glimpse or two into the world of professional wrestling behind the curtain, what struck me most was the accuracy of how that behind the scenes world was shown on film. I've seen interviews with pro wrestlers about The Wrestler. Most seem to agree that most of what was portrayed was accurate, from the backstage meetings to the communication in the ring.
The wrestling itself was fun and intense. Jen and I both agreed we could have gone for a little bit more, but that's just us. Besides, the director had to make sure he had enough time to take us inside...
The Strip Club! Yes, there is a boatload of full frontal in this movie. I covered my eyes every time and whispered to Jen, "This movie is nominated for an Academy Award, so it's okay that everyone is naked." Even I, a proud, red-blooded American male, felt like they had about 2 or 3 scenes too many inside the strip club.
There was certainly a point where the movie seemed to be going in circles, but thankfully, it didn't last long and moved quickly to a dramatic conclusion. When it comes to the satisfaction that comes with that ending..your mileage may vary.
Overall, I really liked it. All the acting was top notch. Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei were both money. The girl who played Rourke's daughter was pretty good too and the guy who plays Rourke's boss at the supermarket steals a few scenes. Like I said, I'm glad I saw The Wrestler and I will be rooting for Mickey and Marisa when The Oscars come up in a few weeks.
